School Leadership Team (SLT)

Each New York City public school is required to establish a School Leadership Team (SLT), consisting of equal numbers of parents and staff. Parent and teacher members are elected to the SLT for a three-year term. Elections are held in the late spring for parent members and early fall for teacher members. In addition, the principal, parent coordinator, UFT union representative, and PTA president serve on the SLT.

The SLT has the extremely important and rewarding job of developing and enacting PS 6X’s annual Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). The SLT also works to align the school’s budget with the CEP in order to achieve our annual goals. Among the SLT’s other activities are planning and sponsoring workshops for parents and teachers aimed at addressing challenges at school and at home.

The SLT meets once a month, our last 2 meetings are on May 5th and June 9th 2021 at 2:30pm via Zoom. Members of the PS 6X community who are not among those officially elected to serve on the SLT may still come to meetings to observe and are encouraged to talk to the elected representatives outside of meetings regarding their concerns and to make suggestions.

Interested in working with school administrators, teachers, and other parents to help spell out curriculum priorities and align them with the school’s budget?  Run for the School Leadership Team (SLT)!

What is the SLT?

School Leadership Teams (SLTs) are vehicles for developing school-based educational policies, and ensuring that resources are aligned to implement those policies. SLTs assist in the evaluation and assessment of a school’s educational programs and their effects on student achievement. SLTs play a significant role in creating a structure for school-based decision making, and shaping the path to a collaborative school culture.

What is the role of an SLT?

An SLT is responsible for developing a school’s Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). The SLT is not responsible for the hiring or firing of school staff. However, consistent with Chancellor’s Regulation C-30, the SLT must be consulted prior to the appointment of a principal or assistant principal candidate to the school. An SLT provides an annual assessment to the community district or high school superintendent regarding the principal’s record of developing an effective, shared decision-making relationship with the SLT members during the year.

The PS 6X School Leadership Team

School Leadership Teams exist in every New York City public school and includes representatives of the school’s teachers, administrators, and parents. The school principal, the PTA president (or designated co-president) and the UFT chapter leader are mandatory members of the SLT.
